The Loom is Kashmir Expo’s collection of handwoven pashmina, built around two techniques that have defined Kashmiri shawl-making for centuries: sozni needlework and kani weaving. Both take months of skilled hand labour, and no two pieces are ever quite identical.
Sozni is a fine needle-embroidery technique worked directly onto the pashmina base, usually along the borders or in scattered motifs across the body of the shawl. The best sozni work is done so finely that the embroidery looks almost identical on both sides of the fabric. Our cream sozni shawl uses this technique on soft, lightweight pashmina wool sourced from Changthangi goats.
Kani shawls are woven, not embroidered: the pattern is built thread by thread on a traditional loom using small wooden sticks called kanis instead of a shuttle. Kanihama, a village near Srinagar, is the historic home of this craft, and a single kani shawl can take a skilled weaver several months to complete.
Genuine pashmina is warm without being heavy, and it can typically be pulled through a ring because of how fine the wool is. It should also carry a GI (Geographical Indication) tag when purchased from a verified Kashmiri source, which is something we provide with our shawls.
